Pilgrimage - through remote landscapes

This section is not the last section along the Moselle, but it is the last section in Germany. Until Merzkirchen, we walk in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate; then we enter the federal state of Saarland, the smallest federal state in Germany by area. At the stage location Perl, we are practically at the tri-border point Germany, Luxembourg, and France. This section up to Perl is ideally divided into 3 daily stages.

The Moselle meanders less in this section than before, so we walk the path near the river until Trier. Trier, founded in 17 BC, is considered Germany's oldest city, and excavations have revealed settlement traces back to the Neolithic period (7,000 BC). Since the Middle Ages, the city has experienced many wars and occupations, but also epidemics and famines that drastically reduced Trier's population. Today, however, Trier is a lively, worth-seeing city with over 100,000 inhabitants. Our route leads to Porta Nigra Square, where there is also a Tourist Office. A rest day with a diverse program can also be planned in Trier. Upon leaving the city, we cross the Saar, which flows into the Moselle here.

The Saarland at the end of this section also has a varied history, with the last chapters written in the 20th century. It was created in 1920 as a political unit within the framework of the Treaty of Versailles and existed for 15 years as a League of Nations mandate, until it was reintegrated into the German Reich in 1935.

After World War II, Saarland was effectively under French control until it politically rejoined the Federal Republic in 1957 as part of a "small reunification".

18 Freunde des Hl. Jakobus (span. Santiago von Sant Iago = Sankt Jakob) und seiner großen Pilgerfahrt machten sich im Jahr 1988 zu Fuß auf den Weg von Würzburg zum Grab des Apostels in Santiago de Compostela im äußersten Nordwesten Spaniens (Galicien), das nach 2.500 km im Sommer des Hl. Jahres 1993 erreicht wurde. Die Wiederbelebung der Pilgerschaft nach Santiago de Compostela konnte damit verwirklicht werden. Aus dem Kreis dieser Santiagopilger wurde im Dezember 1988 ein gemeinnütziger Verein gegründet: die Fränkische St.-Jakobus-Gesellschaft Würzburg e.V.. Inzwischen zählt die Gesellschaft knapp 1.500 Mitglieder und viele Freunde in ganz Europa.

Im Juli 1999 wurde von uns die Teilstrecke von Würzburg nach Ulm über Rothenburg ob der Tauber und Rosenberg-Hohenberg als Jakobusweg eröffnet. Seit 2003 ist die Strecke Fulda-Schweinfurt-Würzburg-Ulm bis Santiago vollständig als Jakobusweg ausgeschildert. Weitere von uns ausgewiesene oder unterstützte Wege: tschechische Grenze bei Eslarn nach Nürnberg und weiter über Heilsbronn nach Rothenburg, Eschlkam an der tschechischen Grenze über Regensburg und Eichstätt zum Bodensee, Aschaffenburg nach Colmar, Lichtenfels-Bamberg-Nürnberg, Hof-Bayreuth-Nürnberg.

"The Way of St. James from Marburg to Vézelay" leads from the Hessian university town of Marburg to Vézelay in France, the beginning of one of the 4 main routes of the French Way of St. James network.
