Before that, however, we arrive in Araules, where the church of Saint-Marcellin invites us to pause. Shortly afterwards, the ascent to the day's passage begins, the culminating point of which we reach at Raffy. After that, the view opens up to a few volcanic cones near Queyrières, on one of which stands a castle ruin. So the Velay used to be a "hot spot".

The Via Gebennensis connects the Swiss pilgrimage routes from Geneva with the Via Podiensis, which begins in Le Puy-en-Velay and from there leads westward to the Pyrenees.
