Vicosoprano

Vicosoprano

From the village of Casaccia we hike in the Bergell, with views of the mighty mountains such as Piz Badile, Pizzo Cengalo, Cima della Bondasca, etc. on the south side of the valley. The language of the inhabitants is Italian. However, most also speak German.

The Bergell came under Roman rule as early as around 100 BC. In the 4th century the Christianization took place through Gaudentius, who found protection from the Arians in the Bergell. The church San Gaudenzio in Casaccia is dedicated to him.

In the lower Bergell, a severe landslide occurred on September 4, 1618. Approximately 2430 people were killed. In 2017, another severe landslide with a huge mudslide occurred near Bondo, burying 8 hikers.

In the cemetery of Borgonovo are the final resting places of the artist family spanning two generations: Giovanni, Augusto, and Alberto Giacometti.

Tipp des Autors

A visit to the valley museum in Stampa is recommended to learn something about the history of the valley.

Orte entlang des Weges

To avoid having to climb up again, we stay on the Via Sett from Vicosoprano to Castasegna. Those who want to walk the panorama route to Soglio climb back up to the panorama route via the marked paths.

Borgonovo / Stampa. The row of ancient houses in Borgonovo from the 17th and 18th centuries along the main road is repeatedly interrupted by small gardens and traditional stables. From the old, two-arched stone bridge we enjoy a nice view of the church San Giorgio, rebuilt in 1694. The interior is adorned with a stained glass window in the choir lunette, a work by the well-known regional artist Augusto Giacometti. In Stampa we visit the valley museum, the Ciäsa Granda, set up in a manor house built in 1581, and learn more about the flora, fauna, and geology of the Bergell. The museum also offers insight into the earlier life of the inhabitants. In the Giacometti-Varlin hall, various works of these famous artists are on display. Not far from the museum is also the studio of the sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti. In nearby Coltura we visit the Palazzo Castelmur. The northern part of the imposing building was erected in 1723, the southern part between 1850-55 by Baron Giovanni Castelmur. The Moorish-Gothic style and the battlemented towers give the building a castle-like appearance, the beautiful garden completes this impression. Today the Palazzo houses the historical archive of the valley.

In Castasegna there is also the opportunity to visit the company Soglio "nurtured by the power of the mountains", one of the many Swiss natural medicine producers on the Columban Way Switzerland.

From Castasegna we then leave Switzerland and hike on Italian territory to Chiavenna. Since the path is often laid on the road, this section can also be covered by public bus.

I wish you a good onward journey and hope you enjoyed the hike through Switzerland. Thank you for your visit, for hiking along, goodbye/arrivederci and have a good onward journey on the Italian Columban Way.
