Ships ready to depart

Ships ready to depart

From Zurich there are two ways to continue: take the boat to Rapperswil, which the monks probably did, or follow the south side of Lake Zurich on foot, as described here.

From the outlet of the Limmat from Lake Zurich we follow the lakeshore to Wollishofen. There we leave the lake and avoid long road sections. Between Oberrieden and Horgen we are drawn back down to the lake and enjoy a leisurely walk directly on the lakeshore. The path allows beautiful views of the Zurich Gold Coast on the opposite side of the lake.

Beautiful timbered house

Beautiful timbered house

In Thalwil there are some stately manor houses, partly dating back to industrialization (mainly textile industry in the 19th century).

On the lakeshore near Horgen, remains of pile dwellers (3,900 to 3,500 BC) can be found. Two Celtic women's graves date from the 2nd century and the 7th century, i.e. the time of Columban. From Horgen a ferry carries cars and pedestrians across the lake to Meilen.

Anmerkungen

Lake Zurich will be our "companion" on our left side today. Beautiful lakeside paths alternate with unfortunately some longer asphalt sections along the road.

Tipp des Autors

Those who take some time can let themselves be carried up from Adliswil by a cable car to Felsenegg and enjoy the beautiful view over Lake Zurich.

Orte entlang des Weges

From the main station we take Bahnhofstrasse (on foot or with tram 11, direction Realp) to Bürkliplatz (at the outlet of the Limmat from Lake Zurich). From here, the route offers beautiful sections on the lakeshore, but also a fairly long stretch along the road. The greater part of the path is on asphalt. Only from Horgen does one follow the lakeshore again and move away from the road.

It would also be possible to take the train from Wollishofen (S8 direction Pfäffikon) to Horgen and walk from there. This could avoid a large part of the heavily trafficked road.

Those who want to hike but want to avoid the heavily trafficked road can follow the alternative route a little above the lakeside promenade, on paved hiking trails through the districts of the villages. For this purpose, one leaves the main road at Wollishofen harbor, goes under the railway line, and climbs between the houses (Widmerstrasse), about 100 meters in altitude up to Kalchbühlstrasse, turns left and then follows the hiking trail signs to Horgen, where one descends to the lake and follows the lakeshore towards Wädenswil.

Attention: from Wädenswil there are two or three possibilities for the next stages:

Option 1: path 7a leads to Pfäffikon and then over the Seedamm to Rapperswil (stage location) and 8a from Rapperswil to Wattwil (stage location).

Option 2: path 7b is identical to 7a up to Pfäffikon, then branches off, follows the lakeshore and leads to Tuggen (stage location). From Tuggen it continues on 8b to Wattwil (stage location).

From Wattwil only one path continues: 9 to Magdenau (stage location)

Option 3: Another possibility from Wädenswil: take the path to Einsiedeln (important pilgrimage site) and spend the night there. For this purpose, hike along the lake to Richterswil (station). From there, leave the lake and follow the hiking trail signs towards Einsiedeln, where you can spend the night. The next day the path (Jakobsweg No. 4) leads either over Pfäffikon to Rapperswil or directly to Tuggen, from where the regular paths 7b (from Rapperswil) or 8b (from Tuggen) are followed again.
