Orbe: Church of Our Lady and Bergfried

Orbe: Church of Our Lady and Bergfried

Today's stage is the longest of the Via Francigena in Switzerland. This historic connection between Orbe and Lausanne runs from the "haut plateau" of the canton of Vaud to the Notre Dame Cathedral in Lausanne.

Shortly after starting in Orbe below the castle, the "Escaliers de la Poterne" lead to the Chemin de Ronde and the bike path to Chavornay. From there, the path follows the Talent river until mid-stage and passes through small villages with castles that once belonged to the Monfaucon family and later to the Savoy family.
At Mont-sur-Lausanne, we come directly to the former acropolis with an impressive panorama of Lake Geneva and the Savoy Alps. Here is the St-Maire Castle, the ancient bishop's seat, and the Notre Dame Cathedral with the unique "Painted Gate" in the east - the most beautiful Gothic monument in Switzerland.
Between Jougne and Lausanne, the only larger place is Orbe, which is why we have divided this and the next stage accordingly. However, affordable accommodations are hard to find in both Orbe and Lausanne. Therefore, we recommend staying overnight in Romainmôtier, then a place between Orbe and Lausanne, and finally in Vidy just after Lausanne.

From there on until the middle of the stage, we follow the Talent river passing through small villages with castles formerly belonging to Montfaucon family and later to the Savoy family. From Le Mont-sur-Lausanne, we arrive directly at the ancient Akropolis offering an impressive view over Lake Geneva and the Savoy Alps. Here, we also find Saint Maire castle and the historic bishop’s seat (now the Museum of Old Lausanne) and Notre Dame Cathedral (12th to 14th century) with its «painted portal» on the east side – the most beautiful gothic monument in Switzerland St. Francis church is located at the centre of the modern city.

Anmerkungen

The «Via Francigena» is one of the 3 Christian pilgrimage routes of the Middle Ages, whose main axis leads from Canterbury in England to Rome. This documentation initially covers the section from Pontarlier to Rome.
