Lichtensteig

Lichtensteig

We are now in Toggenburg and follow the course of the Thur river along the Thurweg to Lichtensteig. Lichtensteig is a medieval small town and has belonged to the association "The most beautiful Swiss villages" since 2016. The oldest houses, part of the city wall, date back to the first half of the 15th century.

Between Lichtensteig and Brunnadern we cross the Wasserfluh Pass. We go from the Thur valley into the Neckar valley.

At Neckere

At Neckere

In Mogelsberg, a visit to the paritary (now ecumenical) St. James Church built in 1810 is recommended.

Today's stage ends at the Magdenau monastery. The monastery was incorporated into the Cistercian order in 1247 and entrusted to the abbot of Wettingen. The community still counts 12 sisters today. Near the monastery stands the venerable Verena Church, whose foundations date back to the 12th/13th century. It is listed among the cultural properties of national significance.

The monastery offers accommodation for pilgrims and hikers. However, the few rooms are heavily booked in summer and it is advisable to consider the alternative in Flawil itself. The stage is then about 2 km longer (which is compensated the next day).

Anmerkungen

The hilly Toggenburg with its ups and downs offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, especially the Alpstein.

Tipp des Autors

Visit the modern Catholic Church of St. Gallus in Lichtensteig.

Detour to Degersheim to the medicinal herb garden with native medicinal plants.

Orte entlang des Weges

We leave Wattwil by heading for the bank of the Thur and following its course northwards. Shortly before Lichtensteig we cross the Thur on the high railway bridge. At its end, the signpost "Städtli" leads us to the center of this very beautiful place.

In the middle of Lichtensteig, we leave the Thur valley to the right and follow the hiking signpost briefly along the road towards Wasserfluh Pass. After a few hundred meters, the hiking trail leaves the road and climbs between houses. After the last houses of the village, a pleasantly walkable unpaved path takes us steadily uphill to the Wasserfluh Pass height (848 m above sea level).

We walk on the road only up to the last houses where we turn off the main road again and climb uphill a bit more before going down to Brunnadern in the Neckar valley.

We follow the meandering Necker to the village Necker. At Neckermühle on the edge of the village, we take the path to Rennen (Attention: do not follow the signpost "Mogelsberg, treetop path"). On pleasant natural paths, the way gently goes up and down to Rennen. There, we cross the Necker river and the main road. Through meadows, it's directly uphill to a railway underpass and up to the village Mogelsberg.

Shortly after the first few houses, we turn left and go towards Böschenbach, leaving Mogelsberg downhill and reaching a road junction near Böschenbach.

We go straight ahead towards Nassen. However, following the yellow hiking signposts, we leave the road immediately and climb up a meadow path. Upon reaching the road, a signpost shows us the further way towards Gonzenwil. From this hamlet, it goes uphill again (hamlets Tubbach, Drüegg) before we arrive on the high plateau in Moosruer, from where we enjoy a beautiful view back to the Alpstein.

From here it is still 2 km on pleasant forest paths to today's stage destination Magdenau.
