Brig/Glis - Gampel

Glis (Eglise = church) remains the most popular pilgrimage church in Upper Valais. Architect Ruffiner built the choir, a side chapel for Cardinal Schiner's arch-enemy, the impressive "Golden Gate" as the north portal, and died falling from the scaffolding there. We leave Glis via the medieval Letzi (defensive wall) of Gamsen and walk along the new Rhône dam to Visp, the hub of public transport in Valais. Just below Ausserberg station, we set out on the old "culture path" to St. German and Raron. Around 1500, architect Ruffiner came from the neighboring Italian "Prismell", took residence at the foot of the rock in Raron, and transformed the old castle ruin into a Gothic church with a ribbed vault. In the 1970s the impressive "rock church" was blown up into the church hill of Raron.

We continue walking along the Rhône dam to Gampel-Steg.
