Columbanweg near Flawil

Columbanweg near Flawil

It goes up and down. We pass former castles, follow the Robert Walser path, enjoy beautiful views of Herisau and the Alpstein with the highest mountain of eastern Switzerland, the Säntis (2,502 m above sea level).

To our left lies Gossau, an important economic location for eastern Switzerland.

On the Jakobsweg No. 4, shortly before St. Gallen, we hike to the monastery district.

At the Glatt

At the Glatt

The history of the city begins in 612 with the hermit Gallus, who gave the city its name. About a hundred years after his death, Otmar established the later famous monastery at this spot. A flourishing period of about 300 years followed. The monastery library is one of the most important historical libraries in the world and is the only large monastery library from the early Middle Ages whose outstanding collection from the 8th century remains intact to this day.

The textile industry was and is economically significant for St. Gallen. Even today, St. Gallen is known for its high-quality embroidery.

Anmerkungen

With St. Gallen, we reach today one of the highlights of the Columban route through Switzerland. The monastery district is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Tipp des Autors

Experience 2 days in St. Gallen with the cathedral, monastery library, old town, textile museum, among others, and a fine St. Gallen sausage must not be missed...

Insider tip: Take a trip to the monastery shop with natural remedies from Kloster Leiden Christi in Jakobsbad, discover the diversity of herbs and the magic of herbs in the almost 30,000 m2 cultivation area at the Kräuterhaus Appenzell and/or explore the roots of the pioneer of natural medicine Alfred Vogel (1902-1996) in Teufen AR and at the A. Vogel Health Center with museum and experience garden with around 120 different medicinal and culinary herbs.

Orte entlang des Weges

From Flawil we turn east towards St. Gallen. Hiking again challenges us somewhat in the hilly terrain.

We briefly enter Flawil, then turn right after 2 km in the village center. The path passes near the Protestant Reformed Church, leading up to Landberg and Burgau. In the core of Burgau stand historic wooden houses. Along the "Columbanweg" we reach the course of the Glatt river after about 5.5 km.

Past the Helfenberg castle ruins, we reach the region of the saltpeter cave (also called Columban cave). To get to the cave, you leave the path at about km 7 and descend to the riverbed (about 100 meters in elevation). The cave is however at risk of collapse, entry is prohibited. There is a nice picnic spot there. The descent is quite steep and not recommended in bad path conditions.

After a longer forest section, we reach Marstal. There we turn right to Zellermüli and the main road. We take it for about 10 m left, cross it, and arrive at Hueb. The path leads right towards Schochenberg, continues straight until it turns left into the Robert Walser path. On the following ascent to the Rosenberg castle ruins, we follow the Robert Walser path for a short distance.

After the Rosenberg ruins – a nice picnic spot – we descend on the hiking trail to the road at the "old customs". Crossing it, we now follow the Jakobsweg No. 4 to the monastery district, passing the Gübsensee, descending to the Krätzeren bridge, one of many bridges over the Sitter river, and ascending again to Bruggen. The signs with No. 4 – Jakobsweg – now lead us past EMPA, the Maria Einsiedeln chapel, and the Tröckneturm in the recreational area Burgweiher. Through the St. Otmar district we come directly to St. Gallen station and then to the monastery district with cathedral and monastery library.
