Giornico: Bridges over Ticino
The path crosses the Ticino over an old bridge. The detour to the church of San Nicolao adds only 400 meters but offers insight into a beautiful Romanesque church with frescoes. Soon sections of the path begin in the forest, the highway is passed underneath, and it ascends to the hamlet of Altirolo with its chapel of San Giorgio. Continuing on the former Gotthard mule track through the chestnut forest, it climbs up to the church of San Pellegrino with its wonderful 16th-century frescoes (Pick up the key to the church from the pastor or the municipal office in Giornico and return it in Chironico) and further on to the village of Chironico with its Torre Pedrini (13th century). Leaving the village, follow the hiking signpost to the road sign toward Gribbio and continue to Dalpe on a paved road with little traffic. (Those who follow the hiking trails from Chironico to Dalpe have 500 meters more ascent and descent, which takes correspondingly more time. An alternative is to follow the Via Gotthardo No. 7 from Chironico, which descends via Nivo into the valley and, along the valley via Faido to Rodi-Fiesso, where you meet the Jakobsweg again.) The road to Gribbio rises gently with repeatedly nice views into the Leventina valley through the forest, passing the church Madonna della Salute, crossing the Gribbiasca stream, and reaches the hamlet of Gribbio with its little church. Another 139 meters of elevation are to be overcome before the road slopes downward, leading to the village of Dalpe.
Anmerkungen
From Giornico in the valley, the route goes through beautiful forests with a magnificent view over the Leventina valley, steadily ascending to the hamlet of Gribbio. After that, it gently descends to Dalpe.
