Schwaderloch. That the area was already settled in the times of Columbanus is evidenced by an inscription carved in stone, stating that during the time of Emperor Valentinian (364-375 AD) Roman forts existed here to protect against Alemanni incursions. This inscription was found during the construction of the railway line. Some ruins can still be seen.

Leibstadt-Bernau. The Loreto Chapel from the mid-17th century served for years as the burial place of the industrial Von Roll family.

The somewhat remote Rettich House was built in 1697. The farmstead, originally thatched with straw, was restored in 1997.

The steam plume of the Leibstadt Nuclear Power Plant is unmistakable. One sixth of Switzerland's electricity demand is covered by this power plant. It can be visited.

Also worth mentioning here are the Swiss Military Museum Full and the Reuenthal Fortress Museum, which can be visited.

Anmerkungen

We continue to follow the course of the Rhine, passing nature reserves, watching for beaver traces (bite marks) and becoming aware of the Rhine's importance for electricity production.

Tipp des Autors

Those who don't mind a small detour can use the railway bridge at the confluence of the Rhine and Aare for crossing.

Orte entlang des Weges

The final stage on the Via Rhenana No. 60.

After a last look at the beautiful town of Laufenburg, we hike along the Rhine bank. Pleasant forest paths make the walk a pleasure. In Schwaderloch, before the time of Columbanus, there was a Roman fort to defend against the Alemanni, as a discovered inscription confirms. However, by the time Columbanus passed through, the Romans had already withdrawn and the Alemanni dwelled in the area.

Then at Leibstadt a transition from antiquity to the present: the view of the nuclear power plant, whose steam plume is visible from afar.

In Leibstadt-Bernau, we take a look at the Loreto Chapel (built in the 17th century and burial place of the industrial Von Roll family). It is located at the eastern exit of the village. For this purpose, we leave the Rheinackerweg in the industrial area, go under the railway line and follow Unterbernaustrasse to the intersection with Kemmestrasse, from where we can see the chapel.

Full awaits with the interesting Swiss Military Museum, practically on the way. A visit is worthwhile. Afterwards, the path continues along the Rhine. We cross the Aare river between Ziegelhütte and Giriz and arrive at Koblenz.

A bit off the main path, in Full-Reuental, is the fortress museum. To visit it, we leave the Rhine bank after the Leibstadt power plant and head into the village. From the museum, a direct hiking trail leads to Koblenz.

Koblenz, the village of four bridges at the confluence of the Rhine and Aare, is today's stage destination.

In the Rhine in front of Koblenz lay the island Judenäule, long the only permitted burial site for Jews in Switzerland and during frequent persecutions also the only refuge. The island was regularly flooded during high water.
