On the Alp Flix
Marmorera. The historic site of Marmorera was already settled in the Middle Ages. After World War II, Marmorera offered the city of Zurich favorable conditions for a concession to build a reservoir for generating electric power. Despite strong resistance from a minority, the majority of the village's residents were persuaded to give up their homeland. In 1954, the flooding began. Beforehand, all buildings of the old village were destroyed. The cemetery was to be concreted over, but the residents succeeded in having the dead exhumed and buried in the new Marmorera village. This cemetery is an important memorial for this unusual event in Switzerland. The church and schoolhouse, 29 residential houses, and 52 stables fell victim to the Marmorera reservoir construction.
Bivio lies at the junction of two passes: the Julier and the Septimer passes.
Today we head up to Alp Flix, a beautiful high alpine plateau. Then on to the Marmorera reservoir and to Bivio.
If you have some time, you should treat yourself to an overnight stay at Alp Flix.
Today will be strenuous: we climb from 1200 m above sea level to almost 2000 m above sea level.
We pass shortly after Savognin through Tinizong. Already mentioned in a Roman road directory from the 3rd century, Tinizong held significant importance in the Middle Ages as a transshipment point on the Septimer and Julier routes.
Now we head up to a high plateau with its different alpine meadows. Alp Flix is one of the best known. Numerous short and long hikes can be undertaken here in both summer and winter. Those who want to shorten today's strenuous stage can spend the night at the mountain hotel on Alp Flix.
In Salategnas, we leave the Via Sett again to save some altitude. For this purpose, we turn right and follow the path towards Marmorera.
Bivio. The development of the settlement, mentioned in the 9th century, closely followed the development of pass traffic over Septimer and Julier. These two passes, which gave the village its name (Bivio = "two-way") and at times had European significance, connect Bivio with Bergell and the Engadin. The Stallerberg, an important regional connection, leads to Avers, settled by Walser. The place lies at the intersection of different languages and cultures, with significant influences coming from Bergell. The nearly 200 inhabitants speak three languages: Italian, Romansh, and German.
