Monastery and Inn Sternen Wettingen

After just under 3 km we reach Wettingen, where a visit to the monastery church and a first break at the Sternen inn (very beautiful building, see tip) is planned. We hike once on the left side of the Limmat, once on the right side. It is somewhat noisy in places due to the nearby railway and motorway, but beautiful paths in the green make up for it.

After around 15 km we reach Fahr monastery with its baroque garden laid out in the shape of a cross, the monastery shop with many own products, and of course the beautiful baroque church.

Soon after, the suburbs of Zürich appear. The Werdinsel in the Limmat with the weir in the river, past the Letten swimming pool, and then we find ourselves in the middle of the city of Zürich, at the main station. From here, numerous tram lines lead further into the city.

In Wettingen, a visit to the oldest inn in Switzerland, "Sternen," and the adjacent former monastery (today a cantonal school) is highly recommended. In Fahr, the Benedictine nunnery, the only double monastery in Switzerland (linked to Einsiedeln), is also well worth seeing.

Zürich, as the largest city in Switzerland, is probably worth a day visit.

In Baden, we descend behind the station (on the Limmat side) to the riverbank and follow the yellow hiking trail signs "Zürich Landesmuseum Limmatuferweg Agglopark," first on the left side of the Limmat and then shortly before Wettingen switching to the right side (always viewed in the direction of the flow). We leave the riverbank and climb slightly to the former monastery, today the cantonal school. There we make a short stop to visit the baroque monastery church and enjoy something at the oldest inn in Switzerland, "Sternen". We use the stay for a short visit to the venerable, beautifully renovated building.

We cross the Limmat on the wooden bridge and follow its course to Killwangen, where we pass under the motorway and cross the bridge to the right bank. Attention: at the end of the bridge turn sharply right and down to the Limmat riverbank. Continue following the signs "Limmatuferweg Agglopark."

Now the path leads along beautiful forest paths and past fields and meadows until shortly before the motorway overpass. We watch for the junction that guides us away from the Limmat towards Fahr monastery.

After visiting the monastery, we still have about 12 km to go to the main station in Zürich. The path is still well signposted, "Limmatuferweg Agglopark." More and more we now hike into the suburbs of Zürich. The easiest is to go to the main station, from which tram lines run throughout the city and where information about Zürich is also available.
